Commissioner Cioloş in Geneva for the eighth WTO ministerial

"Trade must fully play its part as the driver of growth and development. The European Union's commitment to the Doha cycle reflects this firm conviction", stated Commissioner Dacian Cioloş during the eighth World Trade Organisation (WTO) Ministerial Conference in Geneva (Switzerland).

"Every one is aware that a decision on agriculture taken on one side of the planet can potentially destabilise the entire global food market" underlined Commissioner Cioloş, adding "I take this principle very much to heart, and it has guided me throughout the preparation of the reform of the post-2013 Common Agricultural Policy".

The Commissioner also said that trade, development and agricultural policies are the three inseparable pillars of global food security, which represents a major challenge for the decades to come for both developing and developed countries, stressing that agriculture needs investment, governance and coherence.

"The way the markets operate needs to be improved. Some initial progress towards increased market transparency was made at the G20. We must go further", he said, concluding : "Europe remains fully committed to trade, development and food security".

After the working session on Trade and Development, Commissioner Cioloş had a series of bilateral meetings including with delegations from China, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Benin, Mali and Chad.
