EU cooperation with Central Asia covers 5 countries:

  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Tajikistan
  • Turkmenistan
  • Uzbekistan.

The partnership dates back to the early 1990s and the launch of the technical assistance for the Commonwealth of independent states (TACIS) programme. In 2019, a new strategy for Central Asia was adopted.

Role of Eurostat

Eurostat has been supporting statistical development in the region through training courses and statistical workshops on EU statistical legislation. The heads of the national statistical offices are invited to an annual high-level seminar to discuss developments in statistics.

Eurostat also participates in statistical assessments in the Central Asia countries led by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). These assessments aim at helping the countries improve their statistical systems, by conducting a thorough and detailed examination of the countries' institutional, organisational, and technical capabilities in generating official statistics that adhere to both international and European standards. This includes compliance with the United Nations Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics (FPs) and the European Statistics Code of Practice (CoP).
