Commissioner Maria Damanaki hosted an international conference on how maritime spatial planning can contribute to boosting growth. The conference "The case for Maritime Spatial Planning: efficient resource management for sustainable growth", provided an opportunity for ministers, national authorities, industry representatives and NGOs to discuss best practice examples from within the EU and around the world and the challenges for Maritime Spatial Planning in the European context.

The future of aquaculture

According to FAO, aquaculture production worldwide has increased significantly, representing in 2008 37% of the fishery products produced. Europe is the top global market for seafood products, but depends on imports at 65% of its needs. EU aquaculture is in stagnation, with an increase of only 0.5% since 2001. Commissioner Maria Damanaki spoke at the event "Aquaculture in the Reform of the Common Fisheries Policy" about the development of aquaculture in the EU and the impact that the reform would have on the sector.

The United Nations "Rio plus 20" Conference on Sustainable Development, which will take place in June 2012, presents a unique opportunity for countries and their citizens to commit to the protection of our oceans and seas with the aim also of enhancing their contribution to sustainable development. During this upcoming event at the European Parliament, key issues regarding oceans and coasts in the context of sustainable development will be presented and discussed. Commissioner Maria Damanaki spoke at the symposium "A Blueprint for Oceans and Coasts at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) - Issues, Challenges and Solutions", at the European Parliament.

Save the Mediterranean and its biodiversity
