The Access City Award recognises the outstanding efforts made by EU cities to become more accessible to persons with disabilities and to elderly people. For the first time ever, and as part of the celebration of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, the Access City Award competition was opened to cities with fewer than 50,000 inhabitants. Commissioner Thyssen awarded the city of Breda (NL) the first prize of the Access City Award 2019. Viborg (DK) and Monteverde (IT) received the special prize for the accessibility of their cultural heritage. The cities of Evreux (FR), Gdynia (PL), Vigo (ES), Kaposvar (HU) were also rewarded by the European Commission.
