AI HLEG Chair Pekka Ala-Pietilä presenting the Ethics Guidelines on Trustworthy AI

A nine months long journey, initiated with the establishment of the High-Level Expert Group on AI (AI HLEG) and the European Alliance, now reached their first important milestone. 

The AI HLEG presented its Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI on the 8th of April.

The European Commission welcomed the document through a Communication on “Building Trust in Human Centric Artificial Intelligence” while the next steps to bring the Guidelines forward were presented at the Digital Day 2019 event, under the presence of the Commission’s Vice President Andrus Ansip and Commissioner Mariya Gabriel.

The Guidelines are the result of deliberations made by the AI HLEG, in light of the ideas shared through the platform of the European AI Alliance, through the stakeholder consultation launched on this platform, and through further discussions with representatives from Member States.

The AI HLEG has explicitly thanked all those who contributed their feedback on the Guidelines’ first draft and published a summary to indicate how these comments were taken into account.

The journey towards an AI that people can trust does not stop here though. At Digital Day 2019, the AI HLEG Chair, Pekka Ala-Pietilä, announced the next steps that include a piloting phase of the guidelines’ assessment list and a revised version thereof by early 2020, as well as the exchange of best practices to ensure the implementation of the seven key requirements for Trustworthy AI.

Both, the AI Ethics Guidelines and the European Commission's Communication: Building Trust in Human Centric Artificial Intelligence, are impressive steps on Europe's way toward the future. Together with other initiatives and regulations in the field of digitalisation they form the fundaments of  the European big picture of novel technology. 

A major newspaper these days commented it was 'the first time that from governmental side clear principles in this area have been set - even if these guidelines are far from implementing a judicial standard'.

We should - and I definitely will try to - move ahead and contribute to the targeted piloting phase the Commission will launch to obtain structured feedback from stakeholders on the AI ethics guidelines.
