Description of the data collection

Scope of the survey

The continuing vocational training survey (CVTS) is part of EU statistics on lifelong learning. The survey aims to compile comparable statistical information on continuing vocational training in enterprises. It covers the following topics:

  • continuing vocational training, skills supply and demand, training needs
  • measurement of the types, content, and volume of continuing training
  • enterprises' own training resources and use of external training providers
  • costs of continuing training
  • initial vocational training

Available time series

CVT surveys have been carried out for the reference years 1993, 1999, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020.

Available microdata

CVTS microdata are available (scientific use file) for the reference years 2005 (CVTS 3), 2010 (CVTS 4), 2015 (CVTS 5) and 2020 (CVTS 6).

CVTS 6 (reference year 2020)

In 2020, 27 EU countries, Norway, North Macedonia and Serbia implemented the survey. Microdata from 25 countries are available:

Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Serbia.

CVTS 6 covers enterprises with 10 or more people employed, mainly in the business economy.

Detailed coverage according to NACE Rev 2 categories: B, C10-C12, C13-C15, C17-C18, C19-C23, C24-C25, C26-C28+C33, C29-C30, C16+C31-C32, D-E, F, G45, G46, G47, H, I, J, K64-K65, K66, L+M+N+R+S.

The total net sample size for the 25 countries is about 113 000 enterprises.

CVTS 5 (reference year 2015)

In 2015, 28 EU countries, Norway, and North Macedonia implemented the survey. Microdata from 24 countries are available:

Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Norway.

CVTS 5 covers enterprises with 10 or more people employed, mainly in the business economy.

Detailed coverage according to NACE Rev 2 categories: B, C10-C12, C13-C15, C17-C18, C19-C23, C24-C25, C26-C28+C33, C29-C30, C16+C31-C32, D-E, F, G45, G46, G47, H, I, J, K64-K65, K66, L+M+N+R+S.

The total net sample size for the 24 countries is about 111 000 enterprises.

CVTS 4 (reference year 2010)

In 2010, 27 EU countries and Norway implemented the survey. Microdata from 22 countries are available:

Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Norway.

CVTS 4 covers enterprises with 10 or more people employed, mainly in the business economy.

In 2005, 25 EU countries, Bulgaria, Romania, and Norway implemented the survey. Microdata from the following 19 countries are available:

Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Spain, France, Cyprus, Latvia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Norway.

CVTS 3 covers enterprises with 10 or more people employed, mainly in industry and services.

Detailed coverage according to NACE Rev. 1.1 categories: C, D (15-16, 17-19, 21-22, 23-26, 27-28, 29-33, 34-35, 20+36+37), E, F, G (50, 51, 52), H, I (60-63, 64), J (65-66, 67), K+O.

The total net sample size is around 78 000 enterprises.
