Information on data
The topics below correspond to the way the folders in the database are organised.
Statistics on health status focus on various aspects of people's health status, which enables the analysis of public health issues, demographic patterns, socio-economic trends, and disparities in health statuses.
In this database folder, data on the following aspects are available:
- healthy life years
- self-perceived health and well-being
- functional and activity limitations
- self-reported chronic morbidity
- injuries from accidents
- absence from work due to health problems
This folder in the database provides statistics on health determinants focused on various ‘non-medical’ factors that might impact someone's health, such as, lifestyles, and behaviour.
A healthy lifestyle is an important determinant of health contributing to the prevention of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Unhealthy lifestyles may lead to a considerable health and budgetary burden.
In this database folder, data on the following aspects are available:
- body mass index
- physical activity
- consumption of fruits and vegetables
- tobacco consumption
- alcohol consumption
- social environment
Statistics on health care focus on various aspects of health care systems.
These indicators can be used for evaluating the functioning and performance of health care systems, including quality and access to health care services.
In this database folder, data on the following aspects are available:
- health care expenditure by provider, function, and financing scheme
- health care resources: health care employment and education, physical and technical resources
- health care activities in hospitals: hospital care and average length of stay, diagnostic exams, and surgical procedures
- ambulatory care: consultations of doctors, dentists, and other health care professionals
- preventive services: inter alia, cancer-related screenings, and vaccination against influenza
- medicine use: use of prescribed and non-prescribed medicines
- home care and help: use of home care services
- unmet needs for health: medical and dental care
Statistics on causes of death (COD) provide information on mortality. The data refer to the underlying cause of death, which is ‘the disease or injury which initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury’. (World Health Organisation).
In this database folder, COD data are available:
- on an annual basis
- for the total absolute numbers, crude death rates (CDRs), and standardised death rates (SDRs)
- at national and regional level
- broken down into residents and non-residents
- broken down by sex and age groups.
Data are based on the international statistical classification of diseases and related health problems (ICD).
Accident at work
Statistics on accidents at work (ESAW) provide information on the number of workplace-related accidents. Data is available on an annual basis.
In this database folder, data on the following aspects are available:
- characteristics of the injured person
- characteristics of the injury, including severity (referring to the number of days lost at work)
- characteristics of the enterprise, including economic activity
- characteristics of the accident, including the causes and circumstances of the accident
The data are available for the EU members and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries as total absolute numbers, incidence rates, and percentages.
Accidents at work and other work-related health problems
These data come from the EU labour force survey (LFS) modules dedicated to health and safety, which are collected on regular intervals. These self-reported data complement the administrative information obtained on accidents at work. In addition, they provide information on work-related health problems and exposure to risk factors.
The following information is available:
- accidents at work
- work-related health problems
- exposure to risk factors
Experimental statistics on occupational diseases
Statistics on occupational diseases (EODS) provide information on the annual number of recognised cases of occupational diseases for the countries participating in the collection of these data.
These statistics are experimental. A selected set of indicators is disseminated.
Further information is available in the experimental thematic section on European occupational diseases statistics.
