Aarhus to be European Capital of Culture in Denmark in 2017

The independent selection panel assessing the cities applying to future European Capitals of Culture has recommended Aarhus for the title in 2017. Aarhus beat off the challenge of Sønderborg to represent Denmark. Cyprus is the other Member State in which a city will host the title in five years' time. The two winning cities will be formally nominated by the EU's Council of Ministers in May 2013.
Culture Summit: Case for investment in culture as strong today as it has ever been, says Vassiliou

European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou will be among the keynote speakers at the first International Culture Summit in Edinburgh on 13-14 August. Culture Ministers from across the world, as well as artists, thinkers and other players in the cultural field, will participate in the event which takes place at the Scottish Parliament as part of the world-renowned Edinburgh Festivals.

Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou attends opening of Paralympic Games in London

Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for sport, will attend the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in London on 29 August (starts 21:30 Brussels time). "I am certain that the Paralympic Games will be nothing short of inspirational for all of us – whether athletes, spectators or viewers at home. I am looking forward to attending the opening and wish all the athletes an enjoyable games and good luck," said the Commissioner.

Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for sport, will attend a number of events at the Olympic Games in London from 10-12 August, including the closing ceremony at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday evening (starts 22:00 Brussels time).
