Teachers' starting salaries not attractive, says report

Brussels, 4 October 2011 – Almost everywhere in Europe, gross basic salaries for teachers entering the profession are lower than national GDP per capita - and their pay will not even double over the course of their working lifetime, except in a handful of countries. These are the main findings of a report that compares the salaries of public-sector teachers and school heads in 31 European countries.

Short films on language learning compete for Prix Europa

Berlin, 21 October 2011 - Fifteen short films by art and film students from ten EU countries will compete in this year's 25th Prix Europa festival, in the Best Video on Multilingualism ('Languages through Lenses') category. The 90-second films focus on language learning and cultural diversity.

Brussels, 11 October 2011 – The winners of this year's prize, for best new or emerging authors in the EU, are: Kalin Terziyski (Bulgaria), Tomáš Zmeškal (Czech Republic), Kostas Hatziantoniou (Greece), Ófeigur Sigurðsson (Iceland), Inga Zolude (Latvia), Iren Nigg (Liechtenstein), Immanuel Mifsud (Malta), Andrej Nikolaidis (Montenegro), Rodaan Al Galidi (Netherlands), Jelena Lengold (Serbia), Ciler Ilhan (Turkey), and Adam Foulds (United Kingdom). The winners were announced today at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Commisisoner Vassiliou has welcomed today's announcement that the EURO 2012 football championship will be a cigarette-free zone. UEFA, European football's governing body, has announced a complete ban on the use, sale and promotion of tobacco in all stadiums hosting finals matches next June.
