Which information can I find in this subsection?

This subsection covers the following 2 statistical data collections:

  • recording of legal migration, meaning residence permits issued to non-EU citizens
  • recording of irregular migration, meaning non-EU citizens who are subject of enforcement of immigration legislation.

Residence permits statistics

These statistics provide information about legal migration. They include details on the type of authorisations issued by EU countries which allow a non-EU citizen to stay legally on its territory. This data collection covers the following:

  • first residence permits
  • change of immigration status or reason to stay
  • the number (stock) of all valid residence permits
  • long-term residence permits

It provides also a general framework for data collections based on specific European legal acts, for example statistics on EU Blue Cards, authorisations for the purpose of seasonal work, and statistics on single permits. Data is available annually.

Enforcement of immigration legislation statistics

These statistics provide information about irregular migration. They cover the information on the control of the EU external borders and the data on unauthorised stays by non-EU citizens found in the EU countries. To measure these aspects, Eurostat collects data on third-country nationals who are in one of the following situations:

  • they have been refused entry at the external border
  • they were found to be illegally present on a Member State territory
  • they were ordered to leave the territory of a Member State
  • they were returned following an order to leave the territory of a Member State.

Data on orders to leave and effective returns are collected with quarterly frequency while the refusals of entry and persons found to be illegally present are collected with annual frequency.
