Eurostat collects its data on international migration and acquisitions of citizenship statistics from national statistical institutes. They have their own traditional methodology on collecting, compiling, and processing these statistics. It is important to set down common basic standards on concepts, definitions, and breakdowns when it comes to collecting and publishing the data coming from different countries; as well as for calculating meaningful and fit-for-purpose EU aggregates and demographic indicators.

The legislation below ensures that European statistics on international migration provide adequate information for all EU members to monitor EU actions for migration and acquisition of citizenship.

Basic legal acts

Legal acts on data collection

  • EU regulation 205/2014 as regards breakdowns of data, deadlines and data revisions
  • EU regulation 351/2010 on migration and international protection as regards the definitions of the categories of the groups of country of birth, groups of country of previous usual residence, groups of country of next usual residence and groups of citizenship
