Quarterly Review of Employment and Social Developments in Europe (ESDE) - April 2024

ESDE quarterly reviews periodically provide an overview of recent social and labour market developments in the EU, accompanied by specific thematic analyses.

The thematic part of this review focuses on people’s concerns about environmental issues, their willingness to protect the environment, and selected aspects of sustainable consumer choices. It provides evidence to inform efforts aiming to mitigate the impact of climate change, one of the key policy priorities of the EU.

The thematic focus shows that EU citizens are concerned about the environment, and many of them would be willing to pay higher prices or accept lowering their living standards in order to protect it. However, the link between environmental concern and willingness to act does not always translate into everyday decisions and not all population groups have the same capacity to reduce carbon emissions.

Finally, the review highlights the considerable potential to move towards more environmentally sustainable behaviour in some aspects of mobility and choices of certain products and services, such as food or energy.
