TESTA helps reducing the time and cost of translating documents for staff working for EU institutions and agencies

eTranslation is the European Commission’s online machine translation service intended to help staff working for EU institutions and agencies to get documents translated from and into any official EU language, plus Chinese, Russian, Norwegian and Icelandic, quickly and cost-effectively.

To boost security, eTranslation is accessible over TESTA, a data communication network service supported by ISA². In this way, European and national public administrations can safely exchange information across language barriers in the EU. eTranslation is a secure system that protects privacy and passes on Intellectual Property rights to the requestor of the machine translation.

eTranslation was officially launched on 15 November 2017. It grew from the previous machine translation service (MT@EC) developed by the EC Directorate- General for Translation (DGT). In collaboration with DG CONNECT, responsible for the Connecting Europe Facility programme, this grew into CEF eTranslation. eTranslation guarantees confidentiality and security of all translated data. It’s domain-specific engines are adapted to specific terminology and text types that are typically used in specific contexts, such as the formal language used in the EU Institutions, but also medical or legal texts, as well as simply general text such as news items.
