Interoperability is at the heart of the new EU digital strategy

Digital EU

Last week, the European Commission unveiled its new digital package with ideas and actions for a digital transformation in Europe. This package includes the strategic document Shaping Europe's digital future, European strategy for data and White Paper on Artificial Intelligence. Interoperability is mentioned as one of the key aspects.

The communication Shaping Europe's digital future presents a European society powered by digital solutions that put people first, opens up new opportunities for businesses, and boosts the development of trustworthy technology. In the chapter Technology that works for people, promoting the digital transformation of public administrations throughout Europe is described as crucial for the success of the new strategy. A reinforced EU governments interoperability strategy scheduled for the end of 2021 will be a key action to ensure coordination and common standards for secure and borderless public sector data flows and services.

Interoperability has its place also in the new European data strategy, as it is essential for making maximum use of data. The application of compatible formats and protocols for gathering and processing data in a coherent and interoperable manner should be in case of public services encouraged through a strengthened European Interoperability Framework
