The aim of Prodcom statistics is to provide a full picture of developments in industrial production for a product or industry in a comparable way across the EU.

Prodcom statistics may be used to answer questions such as:

  • how productive is a particular industry in terms of physical volume and the value of production sold during a year?
  • which country has the lowest or highest production volume of a certain product?
  • is there a shift or a trend in the manufacture of a group of products over time?

Data sources

Industrial production statistics are collected from enterprises by the national statistical institutes (NSIs). EU countries and 2 countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), namely Norway and Iceland, are bound by the European business statistics regulation to conduct the survey and transmit the data to Eurostat.

In addition, the majority of the candidate countries and potential candidates collect production data and provide them to Eurostat.

Reference period and data release

The Prodcom survey is an annual survey. EU countries can choose to run their national survey monthly, quarterly, or annually, as long as the data are supplied to Eurostat as annual data.

Every year in July, the previous year's Prodcom data are released. For example, data for 2021 were released in July 2022.

Available variables

The following Prodcom variables are available:

  • sold production: This is defined as the production carried out at any time and sold (invoiced) during the reference period.
  • production under sub-contracted operations: This is the production carried out by a subcontractor and sold to the principal in line under the conditions for sub-contracted operations.
  • actual production: This includes any production that is carried out. It covers products which are intended for sale, processed into another product, fitted into another product, or put into stock.

Starting with reference year 2021, data for the production carried out under subcontracted operations is collected separately from sold production.

Classification of products

This data collection is based on the Prodcom list, which contains about 4 000 different types of manufactured products. The list includes the 8-digit codes of the products listed in Prodcom, which is to be used to survey production during that year. The first 4 digits of a Prodcom code refer to the statistical classification of economic activities (NACE) classification and the first 6 digits refer to the statistical classification of products by activity (CPA) classification. The last 2 digits are specifically for Prodcom.

Most of the Prodcom codes have a ‘complete reference’ to the Combined nomenclature (CN). A complete reference refers to the full comparability between data from Prodcom and data from international trade in goods, classified according to the CN.

Data revisions

If previously transmitted data to Eurostat need to be revised, the EU country transmits the revised data when they are published at the national level. If they are not disseminated at the national level, they have to be send no later than 1 month after they were made available to the national statistical institute (NSI).

Eurostat provides a  revision calendar based on the national revision calendars.
