This need for research has been identified in FG 42 on “Sustainable beef production systems”. If you want to know more about it, check the final report of the Focus Group.

Sustainability assessment of grass-based* beef farming systems needs the development of more holistic approaches including dimensions such as GHG emissions, feed/food competition, carbon sequestration, soil fertility and biodiversity enhancement. It is therefore necessary to understand the impact of different pasture and animal management methodologies on climate, soil, water, biodiversity and animal health and welfare with a holistic and scientific methodology.
