Metropolitan regions based on the nomenclature of territorial units for statistics (NUTS). They refer to NUTS level 3 approximations of functional urban areas (FUAs), with at least 250 000 inhabitants. They are composed of a city and its commuting zone.

Each FUA is represented by at least 1 NUTS 3 region. If more than 50% of the population in an adjacent NUTS 3 region lives within this FUA, it is included in the metropolitan region.

Each metropolitan region is named after the principal FUA within its boundaries.
