Eurostat laboratory
The Eurostat laboratory was created in 2011 to initiate, lead and support the development of new statistical projects in cross-cutting statistical areas.
Aims and mission
The mission of the laboratory was to assist Eurostat and its partners in the European Statistical System in answering newly emerging statistical needs in a timely way. It aimed at promoting innovation and facilitating integration between different domains of European statistics.
From September 2012, the laboratory team and projects were integrated into Eurostat's Directorate F 'Social statistics'.
Improvement of the coverage of the quality-of-life dimensions in European statistics (2012-2014)
- Development of indicators to cover quality of life dimensions in line with the recommendation of the Sponsorship Group on ‘Measuring progress, well-being and sustainable development’ to the ESSC

Valuation of social transfers in kind in household surveys (2011-2013)
- Development of guidelines for imputing social transfers in kind, starting with EU-SILC, in order to improve income distribution statistics
Reconciliation of macro and micro data sources on households' economic resources (2010-2012)
- Enhancement of the household perspective by complementing average measures of income, consumption and wealth with distributional indicators

Archived experimental statistics (2016 onwards)
Quarterly registrations of new business and declaration of bankruptcies
- Period as experimental statistics: 2020-2021
- Monitoring registrations of new businesses and declarations of bankruptcies on a quarterly basis is highly relevant as it provides more up to date and frequent information on the developments in the economic environment for businesses than the traditional annual business demography statistics.

FIGARO tables
- Period as experimental statistics: 2017-2021
- The FIGARO tables provide experimental EU inter-country supply, use and input-output tables for the reference year 2010 in current prices. It is experimental because of the asymmetry in EU country's trade data, requiring us to estimate the import uses matrices for each EU member by country of origin. Other adjustments were needed along the compilation process to balance trade asymmetries and align the trade statistical concepts with those of national accounts.

Food price monitoring tool
- Period as experimental statistics: 2017-2021
- Food prices are established through transactions between various actors in the food chain (e.g. farmers, food processors, wholesalers, retailers and final consumers). The food price monitoring tool brings together data on price developments in the different steps of the supply chain. Eurostat has estimated price transmission indicators: the proportion of the price change at one stage of the food supply chain that is estimated to be transmitted to the next.

Skills
- Period as experimental statistics: 2016-2023
- Skills mismatch indicators measure the gap between demand and supply of skills as well as conditions of workers, jobs or vacancies. The following two skills mismatch indicators are provided: (1) over-qualification rate (vertical skills mismatch) and (2) job mismatch by field of education (horizontal skills mismatch). The indicators are derived by combining available figures using EU Labour Force Survey.
