Annual, monthly and short-term monthly energy statistics
The main legislation on data collection of energy quantities is EU regulation 1099/2008 on energy statistics.
Electricity and natural gas prices
The legal basis for the collection and reporting of natural gas and electricity price statistics for household and non-household customers is EU regulation 2016/1952.
Emergency oil stocks
The legal basis for the data collection of emergency oil stocks is Council directive 2009/119/EC which obliges EU Member States to maintain minimum stocks of crude oil and/or petroleum products.
It is amended by EU directive 2018/1581 on methods for calculating stockholding obligations.
Energy from renewable sources
The use of renewable energy reduces the dependence on fuel imported from non-EU countries and emissions from fossil fuel sources.
The current legal framework is EU directive 2018/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. It establishes new targets and calculation rules.
By 2030, 32% of energy produced in the EU should come from renewables. At the moment, discussions to increase this percentage are ongoing within the context of the EU policies of the European green deal, the ‘Fit for 55’ package and the RePowerEU initiative.
Before this legal framework, national targets for energy from renewable sources by 2020 were established in the EU directive 2009/28 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. This directive also established accounting criteria for the share of energy from renewable sources.
Energy efficiency
The common framework of measures for the promotion of energy efficiency is established in EU directive 2012/27 on energy efficiency.
This directive addresses the achievement of the 20% target on energy efficiency in 2020. The quantification of the former EU-28 energy efficiency target was: ‘the Union's 2020 energy consumption of no more than 1 483 Million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe) primary energy or no more than 1 086 Mtoe of final energy’.
