Amyloid is produced when protein molecules get tangled together. Not all proteins do this, and not all amyloid is harmful. But fibrous amyloid tangles, or plaques, are associated with a number of diseases. They are insoluble, and tend to accumulate inside cells. Amyloid protein tangles are found in the brains of the people with Alzheimer’s disease.
