Alveoli are the final, fine branches of the airways in the lungs. They are the site of gas exchange between inhaled air and the bloodstream. Oxygen passes through the alveolar walls and is picked up by red blood cells. The carbon dioxide they release passes in the reverse direction and is breathed out.
