eHealth Week 2011: Investing in Health Systems of the Future
Pēteris Zilgalvis, Head of Unit, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for Health, European Commission
eHealth Week 2011 (10-12 May 2011) is a very special event bringing together policy makers, industry, innovators and healthcare professionals to learn, share experience and be inspired.
At a time of economic crisis, there are few voices speaking of "investing", and yet this is exactly the theme of the conference this year. But making eHealth solutions work for future generations is not just about investing money: often, the biggest barriers to rolling out eHealth solutions are legal, technical, semantic and educational.
It is arguably more important for eHealth stakeholders to invest their time and energy. The high numbers of registrations for eHealth Week suggest that they are ready to do so. In the same spirit, this year's event will be more interactive and participative than ever before, with all delegates – up to the ministerial level – actively involved. Stakeholders will have the opportunity to interact with policy makers, and participants will come together in partnership to find innovative eHealth solutions for active and healthy ageing.
eHealth week is also the chance for us to set bold targets to combat the rise in chronic health conditions through eHealth solutions. Investing our time and energy now promises a handsome return in the form of more efficient and effective health systems for the generations to come.
