Welcome

Mental Health in Primary Care: Enhancing Treatment and Promoting Mental Health

By Lisette Tiddens Engwirda, Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME)

CPME warmly welcomes the World Mental Health Day as a means to promote mental health and make it a worldwide priority. This year’s theme places mental health at the heart of primary care.

Today, it is estimated that about 11% of the population experiences mental disorders, which will likely be the main cause of incapacity to work by 2020. Currently, depression is already the most prevalent health problem in many EU countries.

It is crucial to emphasize that mental health is not only fundamental to good overall health and quality of life, but it is also key to productivity and the ability to work and therefore to Europe’s sustainable development.

This year is important for mental health in Europe because of the first steps towards implementation of the European Pact for Mental Health and Well Being and the organization of Commission-supported thematic conferences.

Doctors and especially primary care physicians play an important role – which must be based on sound training, clinical skills and the availability of responsive mental health services. The integrated approach attempts to make the services and professionals more available to all EU citizens. Combined with preventive measures, this will hopefully contribute to making Europe’s commitment to solidarity and social justice a sustainable pledge.
