New Commission initiative on the health of young people 'Be healthy, be yourself'

By Androulla Vassiliou: European Commissioner for Health

"I would like young people to participate actively in decisions regarding their health and to encourage them to take responsibility for their choices and lifestyles."

Health of young people in the EU today is better than it has ever been. However, there are also worrying signs: far too many young people adopt lifestyles and forms of behaviour which reduce their long-term ability to lead healthy and productive lives, thus endangering their future. I have decided to set up a youth health initiative which will bring together and build on existing work between the Commission and key youth organisations. The initiative will be launched in July and will aim to empower and involve young people more actively in looking after their health.

The initiative will be presented at a youth health conference –' Be healthy, Be yourself' – in Brussels on 9 and 10 July 2009. Young people from across Europe together with youth and health organisations and national partners will be invited to debate key health issues, such as alcohol consumption, tobacco and drugs, or physical activity and sexual health. Cross cutting issues will also be up for discussion, for example youth involvement, labour market, education, media and information. In these times of economic uncertainty, we need to address and question possible consequences for young people's health. Prior to the conference, there will be a youth camp, facilitated by the European Youth Forum. The youth camp will provide an opportunity for young people to discuss their views and prepare their contributions to the conference.

The conference is accompanied by a new website targeted at young people aged 15-25, available in 22 languages on the EU health portal. The website provides information on recent and future youth health activities of the Commission and serves as a forum for young people to exchange views on their health concerns and priorities. Two new developments on the website are the chance to enter a youth health competition and an interactive discussion forum moderated by the European Youth Forum. The contributions to date already make for interesting reading and provide much food for thought – I encourage you to visit the website and become involved in this new Commission initiative.
