Welcome

Second Annual Nanotechnology "Safety for Success" Dialogue Workshop: Communicating on Safety

by Robert Madelin Director General for Health and Consumer Protection

Nanotechnologies are experiencing a very fast development and are now starting to penetrate the realm of consumer products beyond electronics. This is quickly awakening public interest because of the benefits they promise. At the same time, NGOs and trade unions are voicing their concerns about the safety of these new applications. The Commission has made a significant first step towards addressing these concerns by undertaking a review of how current EU legislation covers nanotechnologies (COM(2008)366) and confirming that it "covers to a large extent risks in relation to nanomaterials".

Today, we all share the responsibility for making sure that nanotechnologies develop, and develop in a safe, integrated and responsible way: not only European institutions, national authorities and industry, but also distributors, researchers, consumer representatives as well as international organisations.

In order to build on the discussions started at last year's "Safety for Success" Dialogue Workshop and in support of strengthening the public dialogue on nanotechnologies, I invite you to a frank, informal, yet structured exchange of views on the latest developments , on the best ways to apply the legislation and on how to improve communication between stakeholders. I count on your constructive contribution on Thursday, 2nd and Friday, 3rd October 2008 at the Hotel Sofitel Brussels Europe, Place Jourdan 1, B-1040 Brussels, Belgium.
