Welcome

Europe against Alzheimer's

By Florence Lustman, inspector-general of finances, in charge of coordinating the French Alzheimer's plan 2008-2012

Alzheimer's and related illnesses inevitably worsen with age. In Europe they affect 1 woman in 4 and 1 man in 5 aged over 85. As Europe's population continues to age, we must respond to the growing burden and face up to the various scientific, medical and social challenges.

The search for diagnostic tools and treatments continues. But in the meantime we can alleviate the distressing symptoms, enable sufferers to live more independently and help them and their carers to achieve a higher quality of life.

France has drawn up an ambitious five-year plan to tackle all aspects of the disease. And the issue has been explored at EU level through the 5th, 6th and 7th framework programmes for research, the Era-net Neuron call for projects, the EuroCoDe programme on dementia and policy discussions on the development of high-quality, accessible long-term care.

All EU countries are grappling with issues relating to prevention, integrated care and treatment, support for carers, research, and maintaining the dignity of sufferers. While ultimate responsibility for finding solutions lies with national authorities, they can make more and faster progress by pooling experience, sharing good practice and cooperating on scientific projects. That will be the focus at the conference to be held by the French Presidency in Paris on 30 and 31 October. France's goal is to promote joint projects to combat this disease affecting millions of Europeans.

Improving the quality of life in later years

Vast improvements in the quality of life of the elderly can be achieved by bringing nursing and physiotherapy teams into residential care homes for older people. According to an intensive two-year pilot scheme undertaken in the United Kingdom, not only will this improve quality of life for patients, but hospital admissions will also fall as a result.
