Patients require quick access to safe, affordable, effective and good quality medicines. We now celebrate fifty years of European pharmaceutical legislation aimed at therapeutic innovation.

This legislation provides adequate protection of clinical trial subjects, efficient control of products before and during marketing and dissemination of objective information for a more rational use. It also provides incentives for the development of orphan drugs for rare diseases and of specific medicines for children.

Gastein 2015 to focus on securing health in Europe, balancing priorities, sharing responsibilities  »

The European Health Forum Gastein is the leading annual health policy event in the EU health care and offers a platform for decision-makers in various fields of public health and health care. This year's event is from 30 September to 2 October 2015 in Gastein, Austria.

EU action against cancer has had measurable impact over its 30 year history  »

A joint conference by the Commission and the Luxembourg Presidency held Tuesday 15 September examined the strides made in the field of cancer, but also the outlook for the future. Huge progress has been made, but cancer is still the 2nd leading killer in the EU.

Commission publishes guidelines on the prudent use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine  »

The guidelines aim to prevent the overuse and misuse of antibiotics by sharing best-practices in Member States. Antimicrobial resistance causes 25,000 deaths annually and over €1.5 billion in healthcare expenses and productivity losses in Europe alone.

Rare Diseases Joint Action launched in Luxembourg on 15 September 2015  »

The Joint Action runs through May 2018 and involves all Member States and representatives from Norway Iceland, Georgia, Armenia and Australia, giving the project a global perspective. Rare diseases affect 6 - 8% of the EU population – between 27 and 36 million people.

Junk food expelled from Polish schools  [Poland]  »

An amendment of the regulation on food safety and nutrition now restricts the sale of unhealthy food in schools. One in four children in Poland is overweight or obese; this measure aims to help educate kids about the lifelong impact of their choices.

Target@Work project aims to optimise the work participation of rheumatology patients  [Netherlands]  »

This pilot project currently running in six medical centres, supporting more than 75 rheumatologists and nurses, and involving over 800 patients. If successful in the Netherlands, it could be replicated in other countries and adapted to other contexts.
