Citizens in the European Union expect good quality healthcare, and in fact, it's been promised to them  in the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union, which  states that a high level of human health protection is to be ensured in the definition and implementation of all Union policies and activities and that the EU action should  complement national policies and encourage cooperation between Member States in the field of public health while respecting the responsibilities of the Member States for the organisation and delivery of health services and medical care.

Opinion on Cetylpyridinium chloride open for public consultation until 29 May 2015  »

Comments are welcome on the preliminary Opinion by the Commission's independent Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety on the safety of cetylpyridinium chloride, which is used as a preservative in cosmetics including mouthwashes,skin lotions and deodorants.

Euro-Peristat study shows widely different rates of caesarean births in Europe  »

Rates of caesarean section ranged from 14.8% to 52.2% of all births in Europe according to this study, which calls for more research on the impact of differences in clinical guidelines, healthcare systems and their financing and parents' and professionals' attitudes to care at delivery.

Commission presents report on the use of delegated powers for medicinal products  »

The Commission transmitted to the European Parliament and the Council a report on the use of delegated powers provided by the EU pharmaceutical legislation, fulfilling a legal obligation which requires the Commission to prepare such report every five years.

Bill approved to offer free General Practitioner services to the oldest and youngest citizens  [Ireland]  »

Subject to the legislation being passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas (the Irish Houses of Parliament), the objective is to have a universal General Practitioner service for over 70s by this year. This is proposed to coincide with the introduction of the under-sixes service.

Health MEPs propose blueprint for safer healthcare  »

This Health Committee resolution suggests measures to improve patient safety, including using antibiotics more prudently and promoting innovation. MEPs note that between 8 and 12% of hospital patients in the EU suffer adverse events such as healthcare-related infections.
