Health at a Glance: accurate check-up results on which to base policy decisions

Health, like happiness, can be difficult to measure.  But fortunately, we can measure some aspects about public health and our health systems, with a very useful tool known as Health at a Glance.

Health at a Glance is a joint report by the Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that provides comparative data on health and health systems in 35 European countries.

The timing for this month's publication of the third edition of the report, Health at a Glance: Europe 2014, is ideal. Coinciding with the start of a new Commission mandate, it provides a factual basis [...]

The purpose of this contract is to provide a conceptual framework, catalogue and analysis on the typology, characteristics and cost of services to be provided by the European Reference Networks and its Members.

Leading specialists attend Commission’s second workshop on the Ebola virus in healthcare settings in Europe  »

The workshop in Luxembourg provided a forum to exchange experiences and discuss best practice for safety, prevention, and infection control measures of Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers, including Ebola, in Europe's health care settings, from pre-hospital to hospital facilities. The event was chaired by the ECDC chief scientist and supported by the agency and by WHO.  Read updates on Ebola here.

Blood and blood components: Common approach taken for defining adverse events and reactions  »

The common approach now decided upon aims to facilitate comparisons between data sent to the Commission from Member States, and associated countries. The guidelines are meant to reduce the reporting burden by clarifying issues before data collection is undertaken each year.

Food for thought – thousands respond to the "We love eating” project survey  »

Almost 3,500 children, their parents, older people and pregnant women in 7 European cities took part in the survey, used to assess people's eating and physical activity habits and attitudes about diet and exercise. Results will be used to help citizens improve their lifestyles.

Health experts and ministers from the European Commission, the WHO, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Britain, Canada and the US met on 11 December to discuss collective preparedness and response to various types of health threats, including Ebola.

The marketing and advertising of such foods to children was the focus of the 24 November meeting of the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.

Parents should get their toddlers vaccinated against flu now to protect them from severe illness, advised the United Kingdom's Chief Medical Officer.

First annual national suicide report states one in 50 deaths are due to suicide  [France]  »

According to this first annual report by the French National Suicide Observatory, more than 11 000 people die by suicide each year in France, or one in 50 deaths, and nearly 200,000 are taken into emergency after a suicide attempt.

This Italian Presidency event takes a multi-sectorial approach to the problem of antimicrobial resistance and features high-level speakers including John F. Ryan, Acting Director for Public Health from the Commission, who will present the EU's commitment to tackle AMR.
