Special protection areas are areas classified by a Member State of the European Union as a special protection area for the conservation of species of birds which are

  • in danger of extinction;
  • vulnerable to specific changes in their habitat;
  • considered rare because of small populations or restricted local distribution; or
  • requiring particular attention for reasons of the specific nature of their habitat, in a geographical sea or land area where Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds applies.
