Free movement and social protection of third-country nationals in the aftermath of mass influx of war refugees from Ukraine

The EC-funded MoveS network (Free Movement and Social Security Coordination) organised a seminar in Warsaw (Poland) on 23 February 2023.

The seminar was organised by MoveS in collaboration with its Polish national expert Gertuda Uścińska. MoveS is an EC-funded network of independent experts from 32 European countries coordinated by Eftheia and Deloitte.

The seminar was divided in 3 sessions.

In the first session, the presentations of Polish government officials focused on the organisation of assistance and temporary protection to millions of displaced persons from Ukraine who have entered Poland in a very short period of time, and the economic consequences of this mass influx of refugees. In the second session, representatives of the European Commission spoke about free movement of workers, social security coordination and migration of third-country nationals, and how the EU provisions affect displaced persons from Ukraine and other third-country nationals. In the third session, experts from Austria, Czechia, Romania and Poland discussed good practices, problems and obstacles in applying the provisions on free movement and social protection of third-country nationals, the impact of special national laws and agreements, as well as the key challenges for effective cooperation within the EU, including exchange of information and balance of efforts.
