Organ donation and transplantation – a European approach
By Rafael Matesanz, Director of the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), Spain
Transplantation techniques are saving thousand of lives all over the world every year. For many patients, they represent the only hope for salvation or the only opportunity to improve significantly their quality of life. The great paradox, however, is the fact that no fewer than 12 European citizens die every day because not enough organs are available for transplant. Furthermore, the differences in organ availability are greater than 10:1 between the various EU member countries. There are also marked differences in the levels of quality and safety of the treatment provided.
These are the reasons why EU has begun drafting a directive focused on quality and safety aspects of organ transplantation. The aim is to provide the best possible treatment to all EU citizens. Furthermore, an Action Plan is being developed to improve organ availability by implementing more effective transplant organisation, professional training programmes and adequate operative standards. This should enable EU member countries to share best practices in the field with each other.
These two initiatives should ensure that all EU citizens have the best chance of receiving this type of treatment with a high level of quality. It deserves strong support because many lives can be saved.
