Tutorial:Wikitext editing buttons

This tutorial first briefly explains what common actions (cut, copy, paste, etc.) to perform via the right mouse-click menu and then describes the editing buttons above the wikitext editing pane to edit more efficiently (than manually or via copy & paste).

Tutorial editor buttons.PNG

The buttons fall into two categories:

  • pre-formatted text processing buttons to put text in bold or italic, create headings, etc.;
  • insertion buttons for adding
  • links (often activating a template specially created for linking to glossary page, legal text in EUR-Lex, Eurostat publication, database view, ...);
  • the most used wikitext code (for internal or external link, footnote, formula, ...);
  • objects like an image or a table.

For a more task-oriented perspective, consult the tutorials on creating statistical articles (and more specifically Tutorial:How to create an article - enter glossary items).

Right mouse-click actions

If you position the cursor in the editing pane or select a text section and then click the right mouse button, a menu opens with possible actions (these can be slightly different, depending on browser: Explorer, Firefox, ...):

Text processing buttons

Tutorial editor text.PNG

This first set of editing buttons can be used for formatting selected words or text sections. As most are probably quite familiar, they are only briefly explained, in order of appearance.

Select all

  • click 'next' to move to the next line where it appears, etc;
  • by ticking 'match case' the search distinguishes small and large cap, not ticking it results in an indiscriminate search for both;
  • replace
  • if you want to replace the text or string in the 'Find' box with another one, complete the second box 'Replace' and click 'replace' button - the first term encountered is replaced; if you want to replace the term or string everywhere in the text, click 'replace all' - WARNING: be careful, some unexpected replacements in the middle of words might take place!
  • if the 'Replace' box has been left empty and the button 'replace' or 'replace all' is clicked, the term in the 'Find' box is removed the first time it occurs or in the whole text, respectively.
