Judges preside over civil and criminal proceedings, hearings and trials in courts of law. The Eurostat crime statistics requires a count of officials authorised to preside over criminal cases professionally. The authorisation includes to reach a verdict in criminal cases (conviction or acquittal); and pass a sentence for those convicted. Jurors, clerks, and voluntary or honorary judges are not supposed to be counted as professional judges.
