13/11/2008 - 14/11/2008 : Workshop "Five years of an enlarged EU – a positive-sum game"

This workshop will discuss the consequences of the latest enlargement for the old and new Member States as well as for the EU as a whole

On 1 May 2009, during the Czech Presidency, the European Union will celebrate the fifth anniversary of the 2004 enlargement. In preparation of this event and as an input to the Commission's own reflections on the subject, a workshop is organised.

With respect to enlargement, a lot of emphasis is put on costs and challenges, while its advantages - a wider Europe and greater market access - are not sufficiently appreciated. Against this background, the workshop aims at shedding light on these issues from different perspectives.

The sessions of the workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Trade and foreign direct investment in an enlarged EU: opportunities and challenges;
  • Migration in an enlarged EU: solution or problem for labour market woes and cash-strapped social security systems?
  • Financial integration and stability in an enlarged EU;
  • Integration, openness and growth: did accession make a difference?

Date and venue

13 and 14 November 2008, Charlemagne Building, Room "Sicco Mansholt", Brussels.
