EU Young Translator contest: 3000 pupils battle it out

More than 3 000 teenagers from all over Europe will compete in the annual EU Young Translator Juvenes Translatores contest on 27 November.

The contest will be held at the same time in 746 selected secondary schools across the European Union, as well as schools in New Caledonia and the Cayman Islands. For the pupils (2 to 5 per school, born in 1995), the contest is an opportunity to test their language skills against the clock. They have two hours (10:00-12:00 Brussels time) to translate a one-page text in any of the 506 language combinations of their choice from among the EU’s 23 official languages. The texts will be about solidarity between generations, the theme of the European Year. To contact any of the participating schools, get in touch with the European Commission's Representations in each EU country. European Commission translators mark the texts and select one winner per country. The winners will be announced in early February 2013 and invited to Brussels to receive their prizes in April.
