Holocaust Remembrance Day

25/03/2014

For the third time, the Commission marked Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January.

It was also the occasion to open an exhibition on the fate of Belgium's Jewish children and youth – put together by the Jewish Laic Community Centre as part of the educational campaign La haine, je dis NON!. This year the special ceremony took place in the Commission's Visitors' Centre, with moving testimonies from Henri Kichka and Marie Pinhas, two of Belgium's Jewish children who survived the death camps. A recurrent theme in speeches by Vice-President Viviane Reding, Rita Süssmuth, former President of Germany's Bundestag, David Walzer, Israel's Ambassador to the EU, and Henri Gutman, President of the Jewish Laic Community Centre, was the importance of keeping alive the memory and the continuing relevance of speaking out against the dangers of anti-Semitism and the stigmatising of 'the Other' in present-day Europe.
